Blog Reader Sound Off

So I was just telling Shreyas that I have no clue who reads this blog. Sometimes it feels like no one does, though I know that's not true. But this isn't a blog on which people consistently post comments (not like Vincent's), so it's hard for me to keep track of readership. I go about my day and then, just yesterday, I noticed someone had name-dropped the design work I've been doing here on Story Games. Crazy. Because I didn't know anyone was paying attention.

I'd like your help in getting to know you. If you have a few seconds, post a response or email me (jaywalt at gmail; subject: "Sound Off"), letting me know:

1) Who you are. Mini bio. What games you play. That kind of thing.
2) What brought you here. Some other blog. My Avatar game. Story Games.
3) What you get out of this. Are you patiently waiting until I get back to the Exalted hack? Are you stealing fun design tidbits? Are you stalking me?

If you're someone I've met in person or bummed around with online for years, you can probably skip #2 and 3, but it'd still be nice to know you're out there. However, if you don't read my posts regularly, don't feel guilty and stop by just to sign my yearbook. I'm trying to get a better sense of who my audience is here and, if you're not really part of it, that's important to know too. Cool?

I'm out here, reading along from Hong Kong. I'll also skip the bio since you know who I am. I follow your game design doings through the magic of rss. I play D&D!

2) What brought you here. Some other blog. My Avatar game. Story Games.

I'm old school -- I came here from the Forge. (Ultimately.)

I'm just generally curious about what you're up to in the game design/ideas/musings area. Y'know. So everything. Anything. I guess to be a little more specific, I especially like shorter idea posts and pretty pictures of character sheets.

1) Game designer and IPR guy.

2) A combination of your discussions on other messageboards, and the fact that my wife friended you on LiveJournal.

3) I read for the game design ideas, and I want to try to play Avatar.

1) I am Legion for we are many. Warhammer. Heroes. WoD. Exercise Physiologist and recovering actor with too much attitude and a penchant for self-deprecation. Did I mention I am older than Methusalah and he farts dust?

2) What brought you here: Jonathan has always had a unique view on art, games and creativity that I don't get exposed to often enough. I don't get to respond as often as I like because real life some how keeps beckoning me away. While we don't necessarily agree on things I'm able to feel ridiculously open minded and savvy in thinking I can steal any and all ideas he may put forth here as well as those of his fellow inventionists (hah, new word!)

3) Well, read number 2 for the summation on that. I don't stalk by the way, I'm WAY too obvious for that. Bull. China Shop. That sort of thing.

1) Uh, you pretty much know me from the Forge and Knife Fight.

2) I don't remember, actually. It was a series that you were doing a few months ago, and now you're in my RSS feed.

3) I like reading RPG blogs. Plus, I know some kids who are really into Avatar and are interested in RPGs, so I may point them in the direction of your game.

What do I get? You make many good points!

No on Exalted. Stealing tidbits? Unconsciously, I hope so.

Stalking? Apparently!

1) Adam Dray. We've met and stuff. I don't play enough games to call myself a gamer these days. I sad. I am working on Verge (cyberpunk) and Towerlands (fantasy). I like to write games that model social relationships.

2) I have no idea how I found this blog. I collect game designer blogs. I know I read it before I met you in person; probably found it on someone else's LJ friends list.

3) Keeping up with what's going on in your life. Stealing your best design ideas. I couldn't care less about Exalted but I just skim those posts.

I'm a fellow game designer and kindred spirit. I play pretty much every kind of thing, but if I have a gap in my play experience, it's the stuff that you're on about, and it fascinates me. So that's why I'm here, I guess.

Also, I think you have an amazing talent and I like to just read and enjoy.

And steal. With both hands.

1) I've been gaming off and on for 20 years or so now, starting with wargames and traditional rpgs. Lately I've given those up to my youngest brother, and I'm more interested in indie games - Sorcerer, TSOY, Dogs, etc. Since I just finished up my first year of law school, though, I really don't have time to play.

2) I found 1001 by being an Avatar fanboy and skimming through what was online. That was actually my introduction to Indie games (so I found TSoY "keys" by way of your "key chains" rather than the other way around).

3) I finally get the Avatar game, and your Kit Marlowe game inspired a recent RPG about 419 scams. You also reviewed my Game Chef entry.

1) I'm Christian, that German guy. I play whatever I can get my hands on. Tomorrow it'll be Contenders at Go Play PDX III, for example. I also published a game with my wife.

2) It might have been you via the IRC channel. Or maybe the Forge. Or Story Games. Who knows, it's all one big incestuous lump anyway.

3) I'm mostly taking your fringe ideas and secretly (or not so secretly) work them into my own stuff. Oh, thanks by the way!

Hi Jonathan. I hit your blog pretty regularly and read with interest.

My name is Anders. I live in Stockholm, Sweden. I'm currently playing a Primetime Adventures-series. I like Polaris a lot. I wait for In a Wicked Age with passionate patience.
I used to check out this blog by following links once in a while from other blogs I read. I guess I put it among my bookmarks after the first Anathema-posts.

I'm interested in any updates and new stuff about the Exalted hack, but I really get some useful thoughts out of most everything here (even if I never comment, something I rarely do at any of [American] blogs I read, or at any forums I'm registered at for that matter).

1) "Democritus". I currently mainly run Exalted and I generally play more "traditional" RPGs but I'm definitely interested in more freeform (call it narrative if you will) stuff.
2) I came to your blog via the Exalted Hack post on rpg.net
3) I bookmarked your page and am occasionally checking it out. Mainly because my interest in the Exalted Hack is still undiminished but because I find your other work (Avatar anyone?) interesting too.

1) Matthijs Holter. Norwegian, working on "We All Had Names". Currently playing Itras By and Dogs.

2) A vague vibe that we're on the same page somehow, based on posts from The Forge, Story Games, Knife Fight. But I'd be hard pressed to say exactly how.

3) I don't know. Waiting for you to publish a game, maybe? I don't give a rat's ass about Exalted, personally. I lovez Push. Mostly I read too many blogs, trying to stay up-to-date on stuff.

1) RPG Theory Review editor, game designer, and general fan of experimental RPGs. I play many games, many many games.

2) I've been following this blog for a long time - but only once a week, hence I don't generally reply to things.

3) Well, besides getting a bead on some of the more experimental design and theory work, I'm looking forward to Push 2+ (especially the alternate origin RPGs, I've done a few of those, and I enjoy the concept) and the way things are going with dharmas in Avatar.

Indeed. I enjoy seeing what new pieces of clever ideas come up, and what possible new short-form games/hacks we could try out in the future.
